Barcode Symbologies

BARCODE SYMBOLOGIES

CODE 128
Code 128 is a high density alphanumeric symbology. It can encode the full 128 ASCII character set. It is a variable length, continuous code employing multiple element widths. Code 128 has 3 sub sets "A", "B", and "C".

CODE 16K
Another multi row bar code capable of encoding the full ASCII character set. A total of 77 alphanumeric or 154 numeric characters can be used. CODE 16K has three sub sets.

CODE 3 of 9 (also known as Code 39)
An alphanumeric code consisting of the upper case letters "A" thru "Z", the digits "0" thru "9", and the characters "-", "+" .. " "$", "/", "%" and the space character. It is of a variable length low density barcode. One unique quality of this symbology is that each character is represented by a pattern of bars, this makes possible the generation of this code by fonts, such as TTF and POST SCRIPT.

CODE 49
A multi row bar code capable of encoding the full ASCII character set. A total of 48 alphanumeric or 81 numeric characters can be used. The data is formatted into two to eight rows in a double density style.

CODE 93
Code 93 is a more compact version of CODE 39. One draw back is that the code may not be read as easily as CODE 39.

CODABAR
Codabar is commonly used in libraries, blood banks and air parcel express applications. It comprises 16 characters, the numbers "0" through "9" and the characters "$", ":", "/", ".", and "." There are four different start/stop codes "A", "B", "C", "D".

DATA MATRIX
Used where a very small 2-D symbology is needed (down to .06" SQ). This technology uses a video camera to scan the code. The 2-D code is used in pharmaceutical and microelectronics silicon wafer products.

EAN/JAN 13
This symbology encodes 13 characters. The first two digits are the country code, the next 10 are data characters, and the last is the check digit.

EAN/JAN 8
EAN or JAN symbologies are used for products that are manufactured outside of the United States. This code is really a UPC code except that the first flag character is not a zero. This code is not intended to be used in U.S. applications.

HIBC
This code is used primarily in the health industry. It is a modified version of CODE 39.

INTERLEAVED 2 of 5
Also called CODE 25. This symbology is a variable length (0 to 30 digits) code containing the numeric characters only (0 thru 9).

MSI PLESSEY
MSI Plessey is a self clocking code used primarily in grocery stores for shelf labels. It is a numeric only code and can encode 2 to 30 digits.

PDF-417
PDF 417 stands for portable data file 417 and that is exactly what it is. Also referred to as a 2-D bar code the symbology can encrypt up to 1000 full ASCII characters. The code also supports error correction that will allow the bar code to be read even if damaged or partially missing.

POSTNET
The POSTNET bar code was developed by the Postal Service to provide a system of encoding Zip Code information on letter mail, which can be read reliably by relatively inexpensive bar code sorters. The code is made up of binary elements printed in the lower right corner of the piece of mail. It is made of tall and short bars representing the Zip Code or Zip+4 code. The location of the complete Zip+4 is very precise. The base line of the code should be 1/4" (+/- 1/16") from the bottom edge of the mail piece. The start (left-most) bar should lie between 3 1/4" and 4" from the right edge of the mail piece.

UCC/EAN-128
This code is used primarily in shipping containers. It is a double density sub set of the CODE 128C.

UPC-A
Universal Product Code version A. This bar code only encrypts numeric data. UPC is a coding system as well as a symbology, used to identify a product and its manufacturer. UPC-A is a fixed length numeric barcode which encodes 12 digits (11 data and 1 check digit). The first digit is the industry code (i.e. grocery, pharmaceutical, non-food, and coupons). The next 10 digits are data characters. The remaining 12th digit is a check digit.

UPC-E
Universal Product Code version E. This bar code only encrypts numeric data. UPC -E is ideal fro small packages or any where a small bar code is required. Very similar to the UPC -A symbology except that 4 zeros are suppressed.

UPS MAXICODE This code was developed by United Parcel Service (UPS) as a public domain symbology. This code is a fixed size and has five fields. This code is primarily used in shipping parcels.
